In the Access to History series Ive found battles
and their consequences presented in brief, crisp narratives,
supplemented by readable maps and apt quotes of participants,
better than I once thought possible.

in their use of quotations, maps and ephemera. Each volume
is written by a leading authority on his subject. Nine volumes

NO.3: WINNING THE RIDGE: THE CANADIANS
AT VIMY RIDGE
by Norm Christie
This volume deals with the development of the Canadians,
from a devastated force after the Somme, to a well-oiled
machine ready to take on the strongest German position on
the Western Front, Vimy Ridge. On April 9th, 1917 the Canadians
struck, and won a fantastic, if improbable, victory at Vimy
where they knocked out the Germans before they even knew
the fight was on. It was a legendary performance, of International
and National significance. Asides in the book include: Mining
Warfare, Pilgrimage to Vimy 1936, and The Make-up of an
Army.
